A teenage boy has been run over and assaulted while he lay on the ground with a "severe leg injury".

North Yorkshire Police said a 21-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident in Ripon at about 20:00 GMT on Sunday.

The boy was reportedly struck by a blue VW Polo car when it mounted a kerb on King Edward Road before being assaulted and possibly struck with a weapon.

He was taken to hospital with a broken ankle, a police spokesperson said.

The two suspects remained in police custody on Monday evening, they added.

They said the VW Polo and another vehicle linked to the suspects had been recovered for forensic examination.

The spokesperson appealed for witnesses, or anyone with doorbell cameras or dashcam footage of the attack, to get in touch.
