Transport services around Liverpool will be changing timetables over the holiday season.

Operators running rail, bus and travel services in the Liverpool city region have all made changes to accommodate the Christmas and New Year bank holidays.

The new festive timetable will see changes to the Mersey Tunnels, Merseyrail and Mersey Ferries services, with special services for the Christmas football fixtures also in place.

Passengers are being urged to plan their journeys ahead before travelling.

Councillor Steve Foulkes, chair of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Transport Committee, said: "This time of year is always very busy for everyone and the work that our frontline public transport colleagues do over this period is always hugely appreciated".

Northern Trains will also experience changes to services, particular on Sundays, including some cancellations and rail replacement bus services.

Passengers are being advised to check the Northern and Merseyrail website before travelling.

Buses

On Christmas Day, a special network of free bus services, funded by the Liverpool Combined Authority, will run between 12:00 GMT and 18:00 GMT, covering most hospital routes.

No other bus services will operate.

Services will finish earlier on 31 December and there will be a limited number of buses running on 1 January.

For the Liverpool V Leicester City football game on 26 December, the following buses will be running to the normal timetables:

  • 917 Liverpool FC (Stagecoach)
