A UK minister said buses were the "lifeblood" of Jersey after a visit to the island.

The minister for local transport, Simon Lightwood MP, was given a tour of the bus depot at La Collette and Liberation Station on Thursday.

LibertyBus, the bus operator in Jersey, is currently subsidised by the island's government under its contract.

Jersey's Minister for Infrastructure Constable Andy Jehan said it was a "fantastic opportunity to showcase the benefits that long-term contracts have".

'Rely on buses'

Lightwood said the bus service had received about a 47% increase in patronage since the contract was signed in 2013.

He said this meant a decrease in congestion less people were using cars to travel.

He added: "I was chatting to some passengers at the bus station who were telling me how much they rely on their buses.

"Buses really are the lifeblood of the island."
