A fire near tracks between Newport and Cardiff Central caused significant disruption

Train services will continue to be cancelled or disrupted on Tuesday due to a grassfire near railway tracks.

The grassfire on an embankment close to an electrical substation between Newport and Cardiff Central damaged an overhead line and signalling equipment over the weekend.

Repairs still needed to be finished to some of the overhead electric wires, Great Western Railway (GWR) said in a statement.

GWR train services will remain reduced to one train per hour between Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central via Newport until the end of Tuesday, the firm added.

Routes affected include:

  • GWR trains from the West Country to Cardiff Central
  • GWR trains from Portsmouth, Southampton, Salisbury and Westbury to Cardiff Central
  • GWR train services from London Paddington to Carmarthen
  • GWR trains from South Wales to Bristol Parkway, Swindon and Reading
  • Transport for Wales services between Cardiff Central and Ebbw Vale will not run
  • Transport for Wales services between Holyhead and Cardiff Central will not run between Shrewsbury and Cardiff Central
  • Transport for Wales services between Cardiff Central and Manchester Piccadilly will not run between Crewe and Manchester Piccadilly
