A 20-year-old swimmer has died after getting into difficulty in the sea at Barmouth beach, North Wales Police has said.

Rescue teams including RNLI lifeboats and a Coastguard helicopter were called to the popular Gwynedd beach at about 18:00 BST on Bank Holiday Monday, after reports of concern for a person in the water.

The man was found shortly before 20:00 and was taken to hospital via air ambulance, where he died.

Police have appealed for witnesses.

Det Insp Richard Griffith said: "We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident who hasn’t already spoken to police or may have any footage to contact the police.

"Our thoughts remain with the man’s family who we continue to support, and the coroner has been informed."

The Welsh Ambulance Service said it sent two air ambulances, alongside one road ambulance and one rapid response vehicle.
