Hundreds of people turned out to enjoy a selection of soups donated by 40 chefs from local hotels, restaurants and organisations to raise money for charity.

The annual Shelter Trust Soup Kitchen was open on Tuesday at the Royal Square, St Helier.

Anna Gillham, one of those who attended the event, said she wanted to help support the "brilliant" homelessness charity.

"It helps out the homeless and the poor of Jersey," she said. "It supports them when they need it the most."

People lean over a line of tables containing soup holders. Those on the right side of the table have plastic gloves and are taking orders from the people on the left who are collecting the soup for customers.

People turned out to support the fundraiser despite the bad weather and Ms Gillham said it was worth braving the rain.

Speaking about the soup, she said: "It has been very hard to choose because I could have had all of them."

Elaine Ellis is to the left and is wearing a blue scarf with pink dots and a black coat. She has white hair and has a knitted hat on as well. Angela is closer to the camera and is wearing a Christmas jumper with a pink scarf. She has light brown hair which comes down to her shoulders. They are both stirring soup.

Angela Magee has volunteered at the Soup Kitchen for the past 10 years and was joined by Elaine Ellis to stir the soups before they were served up.

Ms Magee said: "The Shelter Trust does such wonderful things.

"We have to remember most of us are so blessed to have a roof over our heads."

She added: "I appreciate it infinitely more since our house was hit by Storm Ciarán where we lost a third of the roof."

Ms Ellis said: "It's a great cause" and added that the stirring "was our upper body workout".

A minimum donation of £3 was requested with all funds going to the Shelter Trust, a provider of accommodation and support services for Jersey's homeless community.
