A farmer died after being crushed and trampled by a cow at his Inverness farm, a sheriff has said.

Fraser Johnstone, 83, was feeding a calf milk when he was attacked on 3 June last year.

The cow pinned him against a wall before he fell to the ground and was trampled. He later died in hospital.

Following a fatal accident inquiry (FAI), sheriff Eilidh Macdonald said there were no precautions Mr Johnstone could have taken to avoid the accident.

In her determination, the sheriff said Mr Johnstone suffered organ failure and crush injuries.

She said: "I am conscious that this determination is being issued just after the anniversary of Mr Johnstone's death which I am sure is a painful time for the family.

"This was a tragic accident for which I extend my condolences to Mr Johnstone's family for their loss."

The Crown and Procurator Fiscal Service said an inquiry was held because the accident happened during the course of the farmer's work.

Hearings for the FAI were held at Inverness Sheriff Court.
