Riverside restaurant closes after 14 months

A restaurant that sits on the banks of the River Severn has announced its closure after being open for just 14 months.

Terrace Charcoal Grill and Lounge Bar, in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, made the announcement on social media on Monday.

The post thanked the public for their support, and added those with bookings would be contacted privately.

The venue's owner, James Yurky, said the business had been experiencing financial difficulties for about six months. "It’s always an awful thing to do, but there is literally no other option," he said.

He said he made the decision to close after the restaurant failed to make enough money over the weekend of the 28 and 29 September.

"I’d hoped this weekend would make enough money. But payroll was £17k and we generated about £5k," the post said.

He added that staff had been referred to a government support scheme where they could claim their pay.

The Terrace opened on 15 July 2023, offering food and cocktails on an outdoor dining terrace, and a lounge bar.

It later added a winter roof to its outdoor dining terrace, and built a smaller bar that sat below it, level with the river.

The restaurant had been due to launch a larger menu on Thursday, following customer feedback.
