A rail operator has warned commuters of disruption due to a station upgrade.

Chiltern Railways said work had begun to deliver "several improvement projects" to customer and staff facilities at Banbury Station.

It said construction works "may cause some disruption to customers over the next 12 months".

The project includes the creation of new toilets and a cafe.

Chiltern Railways said the project would include "some short-term disruption to customer facilities", including parts of the west-side car park.

New toilets - including accessible - are planned for the lower ticket hall.

The rail operator said it was also creating new colleague accommodation at the station for train drivers, should they require it.

It added Banbury had been deep cleaned by specialist contractors over the past three months.

Giles Conway, area manager for Oxfordshire at Chiltern Railways, called the town "a key commuter and leisure hub".

“We are working alongside Oxfordshire County Council, Cherwell District Council, Caterleisure and community partners to make the station a warm and welcoming environment for rail users," he said.

"These projects form part of a wider master plan which will improve customer facilities at Banbury and better connect the station with key businesses and attractions in the town centre.”

A full internal repaint of the station is planned in early 2025.
