The big wheel is set to offer rides on The Esplanade through the summer season

An observation wheel on Weymouth seafront has been given the go ahead.

The white ferris wheel on The Esplanade, approved by Dorset Council on Thursday, will stand up to 33m (108ft) tall and will be in place from March to October.

It will be installed opposite the Sir Henry Edwards statue by the sand sculpture building on the site previously taken by the Super Snails ride.

Dorset Council said it received no comments of support for the wheel and 38 objections. Concerns included its scale and the impact on the other long-standing attractions on the stretch of beach.

Attractions at the resort have to apply for a seasonal contract to get a slot on the beach from March to October.

They are removed from the seafront through the winter months.

From November until 28 February, a wood-fired sauna pod is run on the resort's beach near the pier bandstand.

The resort previously had a £3.5m 53m-high (174ft) rotating viewing platform.

Jurassic Skyline opened in June 2012 ahead of the London Olympics sailing events held in nearby Portland Harbour but closed in 2019 due to falling visitor numbers.
