Demolition plans for former swimming pool

Plan to demolish a former swimming baths and fitness centre have been hailed as "a positive step" in unlocking a town's future development potential.
St Helen's Borough Council has submitted proposals to tear down the former Parr Swimming and Fitness Centre on Ashcroft Street, St Helens.
It comes following a cabinet decision in November 2022 to approve funding for the demolition, which the council says is "crucial" to progress development plans to build a new leisure, wellbeing and training complex in partnership with rugby league team St Helens R.F.C.
If approved, demolition is expected to begin later this year.
Essential preparatory work by Scottish Power has also been completed, resulting in the relocation of an integrated electricity sub-station that previously serviced the Ashcroft Street leisure facility before it was closed in 2019 due to structural issues.
The council's regeneration partner, English Cities Fund, is finalising an outline business case for a new facility on the site as part of the borough's growth and regeneration opportunities, as well as ambitions to raise aspirations and improve health inequalities.
