Agricultural show puts up big screen for England game

One of the North West's biggest village agricultural shows has put up a big screen so people can watch England's Euro 2024 quarter-final game.

Up to 10,000 people are expected to attend Skelton Show at Hutton in the Forest in Cumbria.

England play Switzerland at 17:00 BST with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

Show chair Nina Oxley said: "The show is put on by the community, for the community, and football is a big part of life so we wanted to reflect that."

Skelton Show has been running since the late-1800s and has grown from a small village event to one of Cumbria's major agricultural shows.

It has classes of cattle, sheep, horses and dogs, as well as vintage vehicles and Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling.

The addition of a big screen will ensure people "don't hurry off early to watch the footie", Mrs Oxley explained.

"What could be better than watching the game, with a beer in your hand, as the sun goes down after a terrific day with your friends at the show," she said.

"It's what English agricultural shows like us are all about, serving our communities and bringing people together to support our national team," she added.

France and Spain are already through to the semi-finals, after beating Portugal and hosts Germany respectively.
