Peter Wynn was reported to police after he was overheard shouting a racist comment

A Bristol Rovers supporter who shouted racist abuse during a match against Huddersfield Town has been given a three-year football banning order.

Peter Wynn was overheard shouting a racist comment at the John Smith's Stadium on 19 October last year and was reported to stewards and the police.

Wynn, 62, from Whittock Road in Stockwood, Bristol, was charged with a public order offence.

He appeared on Thursday at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court, where he pleaded guilty and received an £80 fine, as well as the order banning him from attending any football matches played by Bristol Rovers or England national teams.

Ch Insp James Troisi, who led the policing operation at the match, said: "The words used by Wynn were likely to cause offence and distress to anyone within hearing distance and West Yorkshire Police will always treat incidents like this very seriously.

"There is no place whatsoever for racist abuse, or any other form of prejudice, in football.

"We continue to work closely with Huddersfield Town and visiting clubs to investigate any offences and take robust action against those responsible, including seeking football banning orders."

He added: "We hope this latest action will serve as a clear reminder to others that this behaviour will not be tolerated."
