City centre tram services to pause for tracks upgrade

Services between two city centre stations on Manchester’s tram network are set to be suspended for three weeks.

Essential track replacement work will be carried out from 27 August until 17 September at Piccadilly Gardens, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said.

As a result, no trams will run between Piccadilly Gardens and St Peter’s Square stations during this time, with some services operating via Exchange Square instead.

TfGM said affected passengers will be able to use a replacement bus service which will operate between Piccadilly and Deansgate Castlefield stations or take signed walking routes.

Pete Sommers, TfGM's Metrolink director, said the planned works would be the latest of a series of improvements done across the network.

“Earlier phases of our summer works – at London Road, Shudehill and Market Street – have been successfully completed and at Piccadilly Gardens we will be doing everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum,” he said.

“I would encourage customers to plan ahead by checking our app, website and social media channels for the latest travel information  and leaving plenty of time for their journeys.”

Mosley Street will be closed between New York Street and Piccadilly Gardens, with only essential vehicle access being maintained to businesses in the area.
