County council appoints new chief executive

A council has announced the appointment of its next chief executive.

Gloucestershire County Council has selected Jo Walker to take over from Pete Bungard, who will retire in May.

Ms Walker, the current chief executive of North Somerset Council, will take up the role by 19 May after her appointment was approved at a full council meeting on Wednesday.

Her responsibilities will include ensuring the financial stability of the council, supported elected members, and the delivery of "high-quality services" to residents.

Ms Walker began her career at Gloucestershire County Council as a graduate trainee three decades ago, working her way up to become director of finance and corporate services, before leaving to become chief executive of North Somerset Council.

She said it was a "great privilege" to be offered the job.

"I can't wait to get started and do all I can to support the council, working alongside all elected members and staff to continue delivering for our communities and build on the strengths we have to achieve the shared ambition we have for Gloucestershire." Ms Walker added.
