Police remain at the scene of the house fire on South John Street

Two people have been left in a critical condition after a suspected arson attack on their house.

The fire on South John Street in St Helens, Merseyside, began at about 12:40 BST on Tuesday, Merseyside Police said.

A man in his 70s and a woman in her 80s were rescued from their home and taken to hospital where they remain critically ill.

An arson investigation has been launched as detectives believe the fire was started deliberately.

A brown block of flats can be seen through a wire fence. A white police tent, which is surrounded by police tape, has been set up next to the building.

Anyone with CCTV or doorbell footage is urged to contact the force as "a matter of urgency".

Supt Chris Ruane said officers were "determined to get answers to what happened".

He said: "I understand the impact that such a shocking incident will have on the community."

Extra officers have been sent to the area and are speaking to residents as part of the investigation.

Det Insp Steve Byrom said: "Two residents of this home are in a critical condition and I am sure the community will be appalled at what has happened.

"Do the right thing and come forward if you hold any information, no matter how small."
