The Elmswell Services site will be temporarily closed while highway works take place

A service station will reopen next month after it agreed to carry out "necessary highway works" at its site.

Elmswell Services, just off the A14 between Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket in Suffolk, was served with a breach of condition notice on 16 January amid a planning dispute with Mid Suffolk District Council.

The site was closed after the council issued a "stop notice" at the end of last week.

A council spokesperson said: "When the site owner failed to comply with our previous notice to close until essential road safety measures have been carried out, we said we would not allow profits to be put ahead of safety and that we would consider further legal options."

The council is looking forward to Elmswell Services reopening once road safety measures are completed

The council said that it is looking forward to the services reopening after all of the planning conditions have been met as "required by planning law".

A spokesperson for site operator EG On The Move, which was served the notice, said it was "committed to addressing the matters promptly and responsibly".

They added: "We respect the temporary notice served and have closed our Elmswell Services site on Friday, 14 February.

"This is disappointing considering all legal paperwork and agreements were in place to allow the necessary highway works to be carried out between Friday, 28 February 2025 to Monday, 3 March 2025."

"The Elmswell Services will now reopen at 5am on Tuesday, 4 March once the necessary highway works have been satisfactorily completed."

EG On The Move apologised to users who may have been inconvenienced by the closure of the service station.
