A man has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop after a crash with a cyclist in Plymouth, police have said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said a male cyclist in his 40s had been seriously injured in the crash - which involved a red Vauxhall Corsa - and happened on Embankment Road at about 03:40 GMT.

The force said a man in his 30s from Plymouth had been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving, driving a vehicle when the alcohol level was above the limit, and of failing to stop after a road accident.

Police said the cyclist had been taken to Derriford Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The force said the arrested man remained in police custody.

Police closed the road for several hours while officers investigated the scene and reopened it at 13:00.

Officers have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
