A teenager has been charged with criminal damage after a JCB was driven into seven new council homes, police said.

Police were called to the new-build estate on Hurworth Moor, just off Neasham Road in Darlington, on Sunday 27 April, following reports a person was driving a JCB into unoccupied houses.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested and later charged with criminal damage, driving without a licence, no insurance and two counts of aggravated vehicle taking, officers from Durham Police said.

He appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on Monday and is due to appear again at the same court next month.

The teenager, who cannot be named because of his age, has been remanded on conditional bail.

Durham Police said it had found the JCB nearby when officers attended the scene at about 20:50 BST.

Officers were also called to reports of a dumper truck being stolen in Middleton St George on Friday.
