Hundreds of homes across the East of England have experienced power cuts as Storm Bert battered the region.

UK Power Networks said it was working to restore electricity after "unplanned" outages in parts of Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

These included 792 homes in several villages east of Stevenage, 695 to the south-east of Norwich, 600 north of Ipswich and 348 in Horndon on the Hill in Thurrock.

"Engineers are working quickly and safely to repair damage to our network," said UK Power Networks, with current issues expected to be resolved later on Sunday.

"We apologise to those customers impacted, and we understand how difficult is to be without power.

"Additional teams are on duty and our engineers are working hard to restore power."

In Suffolk, the villages north of Ipswich included Westerfield, Witnesham and Coddenham.

Further north in Suffolk, more than 240 homes in Debenham and surrounding villages, and 86 homes along the A140 between Stonham Aspal and Wetheringsett have been affected.

In Norfolk, 557 homes have been without power in Reepham and Cawston, and a further 417 in villages between Aylsham and Coltishall.

To the west of the county, engineers were working to restore power to 368 homes between Welney and Upwell on the Cambridgeshire border.
