Six tonnes of rubbish have been emptied on to a road after a blaze caused by a vape.

Crews from Blidworth and Mansfield were called out to Vera Crescent, in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire, on Tuesday morning.

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said the decision to "get all of the rubbish out of the lorry and on to the road" was taken with Newark and Sherwood District Council in order to "stop the fire from rapidly spreading".

The fire has been put out, and a clean-up operation on the street is under way.

In a post on its social media channels, the fire service has said residents disposing of vapes should take them to a recycling centre "and never dispose of them at home".

"Nobody wants this on their doorstep, so we ask that you all dispose of your vapes appropriately," it said.

In a statement, the council said the rubbish was removed from the lorry "following protocol" after the vehicle's crew "spotted smoke coming from the load in the waste truck".

"We have dispatched an additional waste vehicle for clean-up, and our Street Scene Team will attend the site to ensure the road is clean and clear," it said.

"Thank you to the local residents in Rainworth for your patience and understanding."
