A Guernsey charity said 2024 was a successful year with its environmental work getting a big boost from corporate volunteers.

Guernsey Conservation Volunteers (GCV) said a total of 91 conservation work parties took place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings in 2024 with 200 volunteers coming from the corporate sector.

It said corporate volunteers were particularly helpful in the removal of allium triquetrums - better known as stinking onions - from Bluebell Wood.

The charity said more than 250,000 bulbs had been removed in the three years of work parties being at the site.

Project to continue

The removal of the bulbs creates space for the native bluebells to grow and spread.

It is done during October and November when the leaves of the allium triquetrums are growing but the bluebell bulbs are dormant underground.

The project is set to continue this year.

Angela Salmon, GCV operations director, said: "It's great to have extra pairs of hands to help nature and our local natural environment.

"During 2024, 21 corporate groups took part in conservation work parties with some of them helping multiple times which was absolutely fantastic."
