HMRC workers to strike over sacked union reps

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) workers have voted in favour of eight weeks of strike action following the dismissal of union representatives.

More than 200 Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union members working at Benton Park View in Newcastle will take industrial action in support of three reps sacked earlier this year, the union said.

Workers are expected to walk out from 23 December to 14 February.

A spokesperson for HMRC said it has "robust plans in place" to continue to deliver services.

The strike action coincides with the deadline for people submitting their tax return online, but HMRC said those taking industrial action do not work on the self-assessment helpline.

Fran Heathcote, PCS general secretary said the ballot results "shows our members are prepared to stand alongside Gordon Askew, Rachel Farmer and Joel Hamilton in their fight for their jobs.

"Members couldn't have been clearer in telling HMRC to stop victimising their reps and give them back their jobs immediately."

The union previously claimed the three were fired for "demanding fair pay, pensions and jobs".
