Soldier admits causing cyclist's crash death

A serving soldier has admitted causing the death of a 71-year-old cyclist by driving dangerously.

Sophie Waugh, 31, appeared at Teesside Crown Court this morning in connection with the death of Ian Morris.

The defendant, of Longleat Gardens, South Shields, had been driving a Ford Focus on 28 June, 2023, when she crashed into Mr Morris on the A6055 near Thirsk.

Ms Waugh, who the court heard had given birth less than a month ago, is due to be sentenced on 7 February.

A previous hearing was told Ms Waugh served with the Royal Logistics Corps of the British Army.

Her bail was renewed until her next court appearance and she was given an interim driving disqualification.

In a previous tribute released by North Yorkshire Police, the family of Ian Morris said he was a "loving husband, dad and grandfather".

The man, from Bedale, was also described as a "well-known and loved" member of his community, who loved golfing and cycling.
