Plans to demolish former Legion club for homes

Plans have been lodged to knock down a closed Royal British Legion club to make way for homes.

Greenwood Properties has applied to Cumberland Council to demolish the Wigton building, in West Street, and replace it with 16 properties, some of which would be "affordable".

The club, which is in the town's conservation area, shut in 2019 because it had been making a financial loss for the previous year, planning documents show.

The Labour-led authority has launched a consultation into the plans, which runs until 19 August.

Proposals include building four three-bedroom town houses, three two-bedroom and nine one-bedroom flats.

Documents show the three-bedroom homes would be classed as affordable.

They said: "The site on West Street is ideal for including some affordable units.

"It is close to the town centre and local bus and train services, which means a car is not required as an essential form of transport."

They added the one-bedroom flats would be suitable for older people "wishing to downsize".
