A petition calling for improvements to a waste tip in Lincolnshire has gathered more than 300 signatures.

Critics claim the layout of Bourne Household Waste Recycling Centre leads to cars being forced to queue for long periods.

Petition organiser Amanda Plant said the waiting time had become "unbearable".

Chris Yorston, head of waste at Lincolnshire County Council, said staff were looking at ways "to speed up this process".

Ms Plant, who describes herself as a frequent user of the South Fen Road site, said "the current system deters people from recycling".

"A planned traffic flow could dramatically decrease waiting times, and implementing designated drop-off zones could simplify the process for residents," she said.

She also called for the facility to introduce plastic recycling.

Traffic jam

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, South Kesteven District councillor Rhys Baker said he would raise the issue at the next Lincolnshire Waste Partnership meeting.

"It hasn't expanded with the town," he said.

"And particularly at the weekends [it] is often a glorified traffic jam."

Mr Yorston said: "We know that at particularly busy times queues can form causing delays at Bourne Household Waste Recycling Centre, and our on-site team greatly appreciate visitors' patience during these periods.

"When the site is busy, we publish information about queuing to try and discourage others from joining the queue and instead to visit at a quieter time."
