UN training centre opens at University of Surrey

A new UN-affiliated training centre is set to open at the University of Surrey.

The international centre, due to open on Monday, will be focused on sharing knowledge and providing training with the aim of improving the UK's ability to address climate change.

The centre will develop sustainable economic practices to help advance the UN's 17 sustainable development goals which include affordable and clean energy, reduced inequalities and no poverty, said a university spokesperson.

Prof Amelia Hadfield, the new director of the centre, said: "For us, and our community, sustainability reflects our deep, shared commitment to rebuilding a thriving planet for future generations."

As part of the university's Institute for Sustainability, the centre - known as CIFAL Surrey - will provide training and resources to national and local governments, businesses and community groups.

A spokesperson from the UN Institute for Training and Research described the University of Surrey as a "renowned global institution at the forefront of innovation and learning".

Guildford Borough Councillor Tom Hunt said: "The initiative will play a big role in driving sustainable development.

"One of our key priorities as a council is to create a more sustainable borough."

The centre is the second UN-affiliated building on the University of Surrey campus, with the Centre of Excellence on Ageing opening in 2023.
