Man critical after car crashes into river
A man is in a critical condition after escaping from a car which veered off a road and landed in a river, police said.
The man was travelling in a silver Volvo along Denton Road in Ilkley early on Sunday morning when the vehicle left the road and landed in the River Wharfe between Carter's Lane and the iron bridge.
He got out of the car and started to walk barefoot along the road before he was helped by a passer-by and taken to hospital with serious injuries, North Yorkshire Police said.
Officers have appealed for the person who helped the man, or any other witnesses, to get in touch.
The incident is believed to have taken place between 03:00 and 07:30 GMT on Sunday.
North Yorkshire Police said officers were alerted to the crash at around 09:30 GMT, after the man was admitted to hospital with serious internal injuries.
