Paignton Pier will be adorned with festive lights for the first time this Christmas.

The £25,000 display will be along the entire 800ft (243m) length of the historic pier from Saturday to 5 January.

The idea was inspired by the success of Torquay’s annual Bay of Lights display, said the pier’s director John Martin.

"We thought we are letting Paignton down and it's such an iconic structure to put decorations on, so we have decided to put a display on," he said.

The lights on the pier will be switched on daily from 16:00 GMT which is nearly 150 years old, he said.

"As a beloved local landmark, we feel it’s our duty to bring festive cheer to Paignton and encourage other businesses to join us in making this a tradition," he said.

'Something for everyone'

The directors see the display growing each year.

"By extending the season, we’re creating opportunities to offer more work hours to our team during what is typically a quiet period," said co-director Jolene Wallis.

"And personally, I wanted the children of Paignton to have a bright, Christmassy place to visit after school.

"Even if families only park along the seafront to gaze at the lights, it’s something for everyone to enjoy."
