A Surrey leisure centre has reopened following a £50m revamp with bosses claiming it will lead the way in energy efficiency.

Eclipse Leisure Centre, which has pools, a spa, rooftop football pitches and a cafe, reopened in Staines on Tuesday.

Spelthorne Borough Council expects the new centre to use between 60% and 70% less energy than a typical modern leisure centre.

Council leader Joanne Sexton said the site represented a "significant investment in the health and wellbeing of local people".

Mark Gowdridge, director at GT3 Architects, said: "Eclipse has shown us the future of leisure in terms of reduced energy waste and running costs."

Richard Poulter, managing director at Willmott Dixon Construction South, said the site set "a new benchmark for sustainability in leisure construction".

Open days will be held in November to give residents the opportunity to try the facilities.

The council approved plans to revamp the leisure centre back in June 2021.
