Spilt milk caused partial service station closure

Part of a major motorway service station was forced to shut after a tanker spilt milk.

The "significant" leak happened at Fleet Services in Hampshire at about 19:00 BST on Tuesday.

It was caused by a split in the sealant under the tanker, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

The northbound service station, between junctions 5 and 4A of the M3, was closed to lorries for a number of hours.

Firefighters from Fleet, Odiham, Rushmoor and the Alton environmental protection unit used putty to stem the leak.

Specialist mats stopped the milk from entering any drains or water courses, and the remaining liquid was contained in a water dam and taken away.

A road sweeper cleaned the affected area and firefighters left the service station just before 01:20.
