A woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder over the death of a 21-year-old.

The Metropolitan Police was called to Ratcliffe Lane, Limehouse, at about 14:30 BST on Thursday to reports of an unresponsive female.

Despite the efforts of medics she died at the scene. Her next of kin have been told.

The suspect is being treated in hospital and remains in a non-life threatening condition, the force added.

'Exceptionally difficult time'

The Met Police said that both women were known to each other.

Det Ch Sup James Conway, the local policing lead for Tower Hamlets and Hackney, said: "My thoughts are with the family of this lady at this exceptionally difficult time.

"This appears to be a tragic set of circumstances and we are working closely, with the Specialist Crime Command, to understand exactly what occurred and to piece together the events that have led to this devastating outcome."

He added that officers would remain close to the scene to provide reassurance to the community.

Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact the force on 101.
