A quad bike rider who was carrying a 10-month-old baby on board has had his vehicle seized.

Durham Police stopped and surrounded the 29-year-old rider in Shildon on Saturday.

Neither he nor the baby were wearing any protective clothing or headgear, said the force, adding it might not be such a good idea to carry a 10-month-old on a quad bike.

The rider was reported for a series of suspected offences, including driving without a licence and driving with no insurance.

A quad bike can only carry passengers if it is designed to do so and while passengers and drivers in England, Scotland and Wales do not have to wear crash helmets, it is recommended.

Durham Police said: "If you ride a quad bike on a public road, you must register it with the DVLA, have insurance and a driving licence, and the bike must be taxed, otherwise it will be seized.

"We’d also recommend you wear protective clothing and a helmet, and maybe don’t ride with a baby on the front either."

The man stopped in Shildon will be dealt with by Durham Police's road safety team, officers said.
