Beaches' water quality downgraded due to pollution

Three Merseyside beaches have seen their annual water quality ratings downgraded following an increase in bacteria levels linked to pollution.

West Kirby beach has seen its rating dip from good to "sufficient" while Wallasey and Meols beach went from excellent to good after new Environment Agency tests.

This leaves only one beach in the area, Leasowe, still considered excellent.

Campaigners fear water quality could get even worse if trends continue.

If a beach's water quality is considered poor, signs advising people against swimming are posted.

West Kirby is home to the popular Wirral Waters Sports centre for people sailing and kite surfing, with its nearby beach often becoming busy on sunny days.

Initial data collected at West Kirby suggested sewage was not the cause but investigations were continuing.
