Boosted security to deter encampments in parks

Steynors Open Space in Droitwich has been identified as vulnerable to unauthorised encampments

Extra security is being introduced to Wychavon's parks and open spaces to stop unauthorised encampments.

The district council says there has been a rise in people camping illegally, with six incidents so far in 2024.

Councillors have approved a £250,000 fund to implement the new security measures, which could include bollards, rails, locks, and overhead barriers.

The council says any measures will take into account "the look and feel" of the spaces.

St Richards Open Space in Evesham and Steynors Open Space in Droitwich Spa are among a number of locations identified as vulnerable to unauthorised encampments.

Wychavon says clearing up after encampments is expensive, and often involves disposing of waste including human excrement.

Beverley Hardman, the authority's executive board member for boosting natural capital, says action is needed because of the impact of encampments on residents - and the council's finances.

“The security measures we took to protect Abbey Park in Pershore have proved successful at deterring unauthorised encampments on that site," she said.

"I’m confident similar action at our other vulnerable parks and open spaces will be equally effective.”

The work will be carried out over the next two years and will be subject to consultation where necessary.
