Police were called to Chaucer Road in Gillingham

A man has been charged after two police officers were allegedly threatened with an axe in Kent.

Police said shortly after 02:30 GMT on Tuesday officers were called to a report of a vehicle's window being damaged in Chaucer Road, Gillingham.

Two constables attended the scene where it was alleged one was assaulted as a suspect tried to leave the area on foot while holding an axe, police said.

Mark Cork, of East Street, Chatham, was detained in the town centre and later charged with assaulting an emergency worker, possessing an axe in a public place and two counts of threatening a person with a bladed article.

The 44-year-old is expected to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on 8 January.
