Tree to honour volunteer who died while on shift

A hospital volunteer has been remembered one year after he died while on shift.

A remembrance tree was dedicated to Paul Watts, who spent a decade volunteering at Peterborough City Hospital and the Cancer Wellbeing Service.

The volunteer team marked the anniversary with a potted acer tree, which will be put in a revamped staff reflection garden.

Head of volunteering, Carol North, said: "Paul was one of the few volunteers that contributed hundreds of hours when we needed it most."

Hospital volunteers and members of Mr Watts' family attended a ceremony to commemorate his service.

Volunteers said he was instrumental in attending the staff vaccination clinics during the Covid pandemic and beyond, ensuring they ran smoothly.

Ms North said: "We remember Paul as a cheeky chap who always looked ahead, helped wherever he could; always with a sense of humour and loads of heart.

"The team misses him greatly, and this is a fitting and lasting tribute to Paul where his friends can come and sit in quiet reflection to remember him."

The tree will form part of the new staff garden, which is undergoing a £40,000 renovation.
