Tributes have paid to a teacher who was found with fatal stab wounds in south London on Thursday evening.

Although formal identification has yet to take place, the Metropolitan Police named her as Gemma Devonish.

Miss Devonish worked as head of year at Rosebery School in Epsom, Surrey, who said they were "devastated by the sudden and unexpected death".

In a statement the school said: "Our thoughts are with Gemma's mother and sister, extended family and friends, at this deeply distressing time."

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in the early hours of Friday.

Police officers and London Ambulance Service were called to an address in Nutfield Close, Carshalton at around 22:30 GMT where they found an injured woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was known to Gemma and detectives have said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.

Detectives have appealed for anyone who was in the area of Nutfield Close who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, particularly on Wednesday or Thursday morning, to contact them.

Ch Supt Andy Brittain, who leads policing in Sutton, said: "A team of specialist detectives is already making significant progress in this investigation and have swiftly arrested a man who is now in police custody.

"Local residents will see an increased number of officers in and around Nutfield Close while important investigative work is carried out."

He added: "I want to thank residents for their patience while this continues and would urge anyone with concerns to speak to one of them so they can assist."

Miss Devonish's family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers, police added.
