'Deteriorating' level crossing closed at Christmas
Motorists have been warned of a seven-day road closure during the Christmas period.
The A10 will be closed at Foxton, Cambridgeshire, to allow Network Rail engineers to replace a deteriorating level crossing road deck and worn-out track.
Intensive road and rail use has caused the current level crossing and nearby track to deteriorate to a poor condition, with train services having to be slowed down because of speed restrictions for safety.
The road closure will be in place from 22:00 GMT on Tuesday, 24 December until 06:00 on Wednesday, 1 January.
National Rail hoped the improvement works would minimise delays for rail passengers and drivers by reducing the need for road closures in future.
Engineers will install a new, heavy-duty road deck at Foxton level crossing as well as a new pedestrian crossing desk, which will also be closed over Christmas.
Network Rail said it would run a fully-accessible minibus for pedestrians who want to cross the railway.
The rails through the level crossing will also be replaced as well as 615 metres (0.6km) of track and four sets of points in the area.
Simon Milburn, the infrastructure director for Network Rail Anglia, said: "We’re really sorry for the disruption, but we need extended access to the level crossing to get this vital job done, and the roads and railways are typically quieter in the period between Christmas and new year.
"Once installed, the new level crossing decks and track will serve motorists, pedestrians and rail passengers for many years to come."
A signposted diversion will be in place for motorists travelling on the A10 between Royston and Cambridge while Foxton level crossing is closed.
The diversion route will direct drivers onto the A505 between Royston and Duxford and the A1301 between Duxford and Trumpington.
The A10 is also planned to be closed at Foxton on:
- Thursday, 2 January, from 00:01 to 06:00
- Friday, 3 January, from 00:01 to 06:00
- Sunday, 5 January, from 00:01 to 06:00
- Saturday, 11 January at 02:00 to Sunday, 12 January at 02:00
- Saturday, 15 February at 02:00 to Sunday, 16 February at 02:00
