A "large-scale" cannabis farm has been discovered at a house in a village, police said.

Northamptonshire Police searched the property in Harpole, Northamptonshire, after receiving information suggesting drugs were being grown there.

The force said about 500 cannabis plants were spread out over several rooms.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of supplying a Class B drug and has been released on conditional bail.

PC Chris Partridge said people involved in cannabis farms were often trafficked into the country

PC Chris Partridge, from the Daventry and South Northamptonshire Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "A lot of the time, with these grows, people are being forced into growing these plants, often trafficked into the country, living in really poor conditions.

"We'd encourage anyone with any information on cannabis grows in their area to contact us."

He said a long-term investigation would take place to find out who had set the farm up and who was making money from it.

The arrested man is also being questioned about the possession of a knife or sharp-pointed article in public.
