Rail passengers warned of Christmas disruption

Rail passengers from the South West travelling to London are being warned to expect disruption after Christmas.

Great Western Railway (GWR) said engineering work would be taking place between 27 and 29 December.

Spokesperson James Davis said: "There will be significant engineering work which will essentially close our route between Reading and London Paddington.

"Trains from the South West - Devon and Cornwall - will be diverted from Reading towards London Euston - a train an hour."

In a statement, GWR said the disruption had been planned to allow for work on the new HS2 station at Old Oak Common in west London.

Work will also be undertaken by Network Rail to make improvements to track, signals and overhead wires between Reading and Paddington.

Mr Davis also warned of busier trains as people travel to see loved ones.

He said: "Our trains are really busy this time of year so please do only bring what you can carry onboard.

"Airline style luggage is much more preferable to massive suitcases. There's only really limited space on board for much bigger items."
