A 12-year-old girl who was left with life-changing injuries in an attack by an XL bully dog is now stable in hospital, police have said.

Officers confirmed the dog was an XL bully, which has now been destroyed.

Gwent Police said she was being treated after an attack at a house in Nantyglo, Blaenau Gwent, on Monday evening.

Officers arrested a 37-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, both from the Brynmawr area, on suspicion of owning or possessing a dog bred for fighting and owning or possessing a dog dangerously out of control. Both remain in custody.

One resident, who did not want to be named, told the BBC they believed the injured girl does not live at the same house as the dog.

The resident said they had seen Rocco numerous times on the street and it weighed about 12-15 stone (76-95kg).

He said he had called the housing association a number of times due to the dog barking.

Police said no other animals were involved in the attack and there was no further risk to the public.
