Graves were damaged when a car crashed into a Leicestershire cemetery.

Harborough District Council said about 15 headstones and fences were damaged at Foxton Cemetery.

Leicestershire Police said a Jeep Cherokee crashed into the graveyard, between 18:00 and 21:30 GMT on Saturday, and then left the scene before emergency services arrived.

The force said it had identified the driver, a man from Northamptonshire, who was assisting officers with inquiries.

The council said the car was reported to have left the road on a sharp bend in Main Street before it crashed into the graveyard.

The authority said staff were looking to repair the damage as quickly as possible.

It said it was testing the safety and stability of the graves and trying to notify relatives.

Anyone with information about the crash has been urged to call police.
