A self-referral system for physiotherapy services on the Isle of Man has been reinstated.

Manx Care originally suspended the option for patients during the coronavirus pandemic.

The healthcare provider said subsequent vacancies in the musculoskeletal physiotherapy team had now been filled, meaning it was now possible to reinstate the self-referral scheme.

Outpatients will be able to seek treatment for a range of conditions and injuries without having to first see their GP.

'Easier for patients'

Services were originally scaled back during the pandemic, with sessions offered only in Douglas.

Referrals continued to be managed by a GP referral system due to a shortage of physiotherapists.

Regional sessions were reintroduced last year, followed by the resumption of self-service referrals.

The service is available for those with conditions including back and neck pain, sciatica, soft tissue injuries, sprains, strains, joint and muscular pain.

Self-referrals can be made directly via an online portal, scanning a QR displayed at pharmacies and emergency healthcare settings, or by using paper forms that can be picked up from GP practices.

The website also features self-help resources to help manage pain and support recovery.

Manx Care's joint interim head of therapies Frances Butler said the system would make it "easier for patients to swiftly access appropriate assessment".
