A seven-year-old child has been excluded from a primary school in Ayr after bringing a knife to class.

No staff or pupils in the P3 class were threatened or harmed during the incident at Heathfield Primary on 8 May.

South Ayrshire Council said police were informed and it was resolved without any disruption.

Police Scotland confirmed that it received a report of a child in possession of a knife and "suitable advice was given".

South Ayrshire Council said the safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff was a "top priority".

A spokesperson said: "At no point were any pupils in the class or staff harmed or threatened, and the situation was resolved without disruption to the wider school.

"Parents/carers with children in the P3 class were notified of the incident last week.

"Wider communication on the incident was subsequently sent to all parents/carers with children at the school."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the force was "working with partners in relation to the matter".
