A long-stay car park at a major Yorkshire railway station is set to close next month so work to construct a new multi-storey at the site can get under way.

The car park, off Queen Street at York Station, was expected to shut from Saturday 15 March as part of a major programme of work, Network Rail said.

The organisation apologised for any disruption, but said it was a "crucial step" towards improving the station's facilities.

The £25m York Station Gateway project, which began in 2023 and was designed to improve the area around the railway station, was set to be completed later this year, a Network Rail spokesperson said.

A commuter car park on Leeman Road and council car parks nearby would operate as normal, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

But Network Rail said those car parks were expected to be busier than usual, and people were asked to plan ahead and consider alternative parking places.

Larger spaces

The York Station Gateway project includes the building of a new station square and increased areas for pedestrians, taxis and buses.

The work will also involve a new station frontage, an improved transport interchange and a new setting for the historic city walls and other heritage buildings in the area.

Meanwhile, the new multi-storey car park will feature larger parking spaces and more electric vehicle charging points.

A Network Rail spokesperson said that existing car park gates in Lowther Terrace were due to remain open for access by pedestrians and cyclists during the building work on the new multi-storey.

Mike Stancliffe, from Network Rail, said: "We greatly appreciate the patience of everyone as we work towards transforming York Station."
