Tanker warning ahead of burst sewer repairs

Tankers are set to remove sewage while a pumping station is shut down to allow repair work on a burst sewer.

Southern Water said the sewer off Appley Road, Ryde which takes wastewater from Ryde to Sandown treatment works had ruptured.

The pumping station will halt while the repairs are under way, with 20 tankers taking waste to 28 holding tanks.

The water firm said the work will be carried out from 18:00 GMT on 4 December.

Tankers were in place along Appley Road on Sunday, collecting the wastewater from the burst sewer to shuttle to the Sandown treatment works.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: "Due to the nature of the repair, it will cause disruption and require us to use a large number of tankers, which are currently located at Appley Car Park, following agreement with Isle of Wight Council.

"We have contacted key stakeholders in the area and will send letters to nearby residents and text messages with further information in the coming days.

"We're sorry for the disruption."
