A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving after a woman was knocked down and killed.

Catherine Dodd, 59, was hit at the junction of Liverpool Road and Hillside Road in Huyton at about 04:40 GMT, Merseyside Police said.

The force said a Mazda car was involved and Ms Dodd died at the scene.

A 35-year-old man, from Huyton, was arrested.

A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct watchdog because Merseyside Police had contact with the victim.

Appealing for information, Det Sgt Kurt Timpson said: "First and foremost, our thoughts and condolences are with victim's family and we will do all we can to establish the circumstances.

"For this reason, we are very keen to speak to anyone who was passing by or close to the junction of Liverpool Road and Hillside Road.

"You may have captured valuable evidence via your dashcam or other devices and be unaware, so please check and come forward at the earliest opportunity."
