‘Incredible final gift’ remembered on Manx organ donation walk

People who have “given the gift of life” through organ donation have been remembered on a memorial walk to the highest point on the Isle of Man.

More than 80 people joined together at the summit of Snaefell as part of the Turn the Peaks Pink event to mark Organ Donation Awareness Week, with the challenge replicated on five other peaks in the British Isles.

Rachael Cashin, the sister of 26-year-old Callum Moore who died in a motorcycle crash earlier this year, said it had “meant everything” to know her brother’s organs were donated to three people.

She said: “Knowing that Callum’s given that gift is just incredible and we are really holding on to that.”

Originally created by a team of specialist nurses from NHS Blood and Transplant in North Wales, the memorial walk was broadened out to other regions - Scafell Pike in England, Ben Nevis in Scotland and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland, as well as Pen y Fan and Snowdon in Wales.

The Manx walk was organised by the Organ Donation Committee at Noble's Hospital and Organ Donation Isle of Man.

Work is ongoing on the island to implement the Human Tissue and Organ Donation Act - known as Daniel's Law - to create an opt-out system for donation.
