Nunthorpe knitters pay tribute to D-Day landings

Knitted figures have popped up in a town to honour the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The display at Nunthorpe Station depicts hand-crafted soldiers, as well as flags, aircraft and parachutes.

A local community group, the Nunthorpe and Marton Knitters spent more than three months making dozens of items.

Events around the country are marking the landing on beaches of Normandy.

The group knit and crochet for the community, and work is either displayed in public or given to good causes such as charities, hospitals and schools.

A spokesperson for the group said: "We wanted to pay tribute to all those who participated or made the ultimate sacrifice in the largest seaborne invasion to liberate occupied Europe.

"It is so important that we do not forget our brave service men and women, past and present."
